You're only 10 minutes away from a great relationship with your child

Lessons From Bear Grylls, Man vs. Wild

I had the wonderful opportunity to  participate in a webinar with Bear Grylls, star of Man vs. Wild.  Bear is the ultimate survival guy and also manages to be a warm, down-to-earth, likeable guy.  He said he got into climbing because he wanted to spend time with his dad and feel close to him.  {Let me put my personal plug in here for building positive, healthy relationships with your kids by spending quality time together and reminding you that the best reward for any child is time spent with you doing something they enjoy–anything!}  He discussed how he had broken his back and survived an 18-month recuperation in a military hospital, where it was unclear whether he would even walk again.  He said he realized, “I have a precious second chance at life.”  He wanted to do something to celebrate that second chance–climb Mt. Everest!  He did just that at age 23.

Some nuggets of wisdom and motivation from Bear:

  • Dreams are worth the risk.
  • Rewards go to those who understand what it is to never, never quit.  Be bold and never quit.
  • In the wilderness and in life:  To survive, you MUST keep on moving.  Indecision and lack of action is the worst–you’ll never get there.
  • Prepare by focusing on simple things.  Take time to think your way around a problem.  Don’t let emotion (like fear) take you over.
  • Make consistent decisions to keep going.  “Them that stick it out are them that win.”
  • Don’t listen to the dream stealers.  {This is my personal favorite.  If I listened to the dream stealers in my life, I would never had done anything worth living for.}
  • Keep focused and keep making decisions.  Survival is NOT pretty.   The more decisions you make and the more action you take, the better you get at it.
  • Someone who is kind and who can laugh is the best expedition mate.  Use humor when it’s REALLY all going wrong.
  • The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is just that little ‘extra.’  Successful people are just ordinary people who always give an extra little bit in everything.  When everyone else is throwing in the towel, all you have to do is dig down and give just a little bit extra.

Those were the highlights of my notes from Bear.  If you’d like to see the webinar, you can access a recording at www.passtheball.com  Click on Bear Grylls, Essentials for Everyday Survival.

Stay hungry, stay foolish, and keep making decisions and taking action.
